How my Mother, Art & the Bay Area Thrash Scene Saved my Life
by Mark DeVito - Edited by Joel McIver
It was the 80's and I was a wild teenager, with no direction except towards the stage. And I couldn't play to save my life. Luckily, a guitar God pointed me in the right direction: drawing. If I couldn't be on the stage, I could at least design it.
Growing up with soon-to-be famous musicians all around me was amazing. From fan, to roadie, to designing flyers…I was able to contribute to a scene that I fell in love with. I had found my tribe.
With a fan's perspective, and a smidgeon of talent, I was able to combine my insanity and my passion for the heavier music into a ever growing portfolio. The only thing sillier than my style are the stories behind the work.
My mother was the center of my creative universe, well before I figured out where I fit in the world. She was in tune with my passion for the heavy music, the imagery, and my need to deface every blank surface I could find. This book was written in honor of her memory.
